The cloud native ecosystem moves fast and the professionals building it move even faster.

Over the past decade, Kubernetes has grown from an underdog orchestration system into the backbone of modern infrastructure. As organizations adopt cloud native technologies at scale, the practitioners operating these systems are deepening their expertise, often earning multiple certifications along the way.

Today at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe, CNCF is introducing a new way to support that growth: CARE Program (Certification Advancement & Recertification Experience), an update to the CNCF certification program that recognizes continued learning while simplifying how professionals maintain their credentials.

At the same time, the global Kubestronaut community has surpassed 3,500 members, reflecting the remarkable dedication of practitioners who have completed the full Kubernetes certification track.

Both of these milestones highlight a broader shift in the ecosystem: cloud native expertise is becoming deeper, more specialized, and highly global.

Making Certification Maintenance Work the Way Practitioners Learn

Many Kubernetes practitioners don’t stop with a single certification. Instead, they build a progression of expertise—moving from foundational knowledge into deeper operational, development, and security capabilities. Until now, maintaining multiple certifications often meant renewing each credential independently.

The CARE program addresses this by allowing advanced certifications to extend the validity of related foundational credentials.

As the cloud native ecosystem grows, professionals are diving deeper into their Kubernetes expertise. The CARE program recognizes this progression by allowing advanced certifications to be an extension of earlier credentials while retaining the high standards of the CNCF certification program. In practice, this means that continuing to advance your Kubernetes knowledge also helps maintain your earlier credentials.

For example:

The policy recognizes that when someone successfully completes a more advanced certification, they are clearly continuing to demonstrate the expertise represented by earlier credentials they already achieved.

The CARE program will be fully implemented in June 2026 and will be effective as of January 1, 2026. To ensure fairness for current candidates, anyone who earns or recertifies  qualifying certifications between January 1, 2026 and the implementation date will be grandfathered into the updated renewal structure if they previously earned the foundational certification.

The Rise of the Kubestronaut Community

This CARE program launches during a period of explosive growth for the Kubestronaut program, which recognizes professionals who complete the full Kubernetes certification track.

In less than two years, more than 3,500 individuals worldwide have achieved Kubestronaut status.

Even more impressive is the rise of Golden Kubestronauts, those who maintain every certification in the track. Since the designation was announced at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2025, more than 370 professionals have reached this milestone.

The Kubestronaut community now spans over 100 countries, demonstrating how deeply Kubernetes has taken root across industries and regions.

In the past six months alone:

Europe in particular represents a significant portion of the community. Today:

The global Kubestronaut community continues to grow, and the rapid pace shows just how committed practitioners are to mastering Kubernetes. It’s exciting to see thousands of professionals not only reaching these milestones, but also supporting each other around the world, highlighting the true spirit of the cloud native community.

Building the Next Generation of Cloud Native Talent

As cloud native adoption expands, organizations increasingly depend on skilled practitioners who understand how to build, operate, and secure modern infrastructure.

CNCF certifications and the Kubestronaut program both play a key role in helping professionals demonstrate those skills while connecting them with a global community of peers.

By simplifying credential maintenance and recognizing ongoing learning, the CARE Program reflects the reality of how cloud native careers evolve: through continuous growth and deeper specialization.
