By Cloud Native Community Japan

Today we are thrilled to announce that leaders of the cloud native community in Japan have collaboratively established “Cloud Native Community Japan” as the Japanese Chapter of Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF).

CNCF hosts major open source projects in the cloud native field, and global tech conferences and events such as KubeCon + CloudNativeCon, where innovation is promoted across companies and countries. On the other hand, in Japan, there is currently no community linked to CNCF and the contribution from Japan to the CNCF’s open source projects is not so active.

“Cloud Native Community Japan” is an organization that aims to serve as a hub for the CNCF and the Japanese community, to promote the spread of cloud native in Japan, and to encourage open source contributions and technological innovation in this field.

Quotes from founding community leaders:

Yuichi Nakamura, Director, Hitachi, Ltd.

“I am thrilled to be a part of the establishment of Cloud Native Community Japan with cool members. Through organizing meetups that focus on sharing insights about CNCF’s upstream trends and showcasing contribution examples, we aim to guide engineers in Japan to play an active role in the global community. Ultimately, our goal is to nurture members from Japan who can take on roles such as the TOC (Technical Oversight Committee) and TAG (Technical Advisory Groupwithin CNCF.”

Masaya Aoyama, Senior Software Engineer, CyberAgent, Inc.

“I am thrilled to be part of the Japan Chapter. Japan has a vibrant and active Cloud Native and Kubernetes community with numerous skilled developers. As a community organizer in Japan, my goal is to bridge the gap between upstream development and local developers, invigorating and energizing contributions.”

Kohei Ota, Senior Field Engineer, Apple,Inc.

“After my election as a CNCF Ambassador in 2019, I actively sought opportunities to enhance external recognition of local communities and foster connections with overseas counterparts. I am proud to have played a role in establishing CNCF’s Japanese community.”

Shu Muto, Principal Software Engineer, NEC Solution Innovators, Ltd.

“I am honored to serve as a bridge between Japan and our community. In my role as one of the Kubernetes SIG Chairs, I will be actively organizing events to engage the community and promote contributions. My aim is to empower Japanese developers to become active contributors on a global scale, benefitting not only their respective businesses but also making valuable contributions to society and the software industry.”

To celebrate the establishment of Cloud Native Community Japan, a kick-off meetup is scheduled on December 1st with CNCF CTO Chris Aniszczyk as the keynote speaker. For the latest information on the kick-off meetup and Cloud Native Community Japan, please visit the official page.

Chris Aniszczyk, Cloud Native Computing Foundation said:

“I am excited to hear about the launch of the CNCF Japan Chapter. I believe the opportunities for learning and networking in the native language and local meetings will help the community contribute to the CNCF further. I am looking forward to seeing the members of the CNCF Japan Chapter in December in Tokyo.”

We will continue to hold meetups and events with the support of the Linux Foundation Japan and in cooperation with the CNCF and related communities in Japan.

Noriaki Fukuyasu, VP of Japan Operations, the Linux Foundation said

“I am very happy to hear about the launch of the CNCF Japan Chapter. Although the number of companies from Japan that are involved in OSS activities are increasing, there are still not many companies that are actively involved as part of their business strategy, such as open sourcing their software and contributing code. I will do my best to support the founding members who lead community activities in collaboration with CNCF. I hope that the hurdles for participating in CNCF activities will be lowered.”

Furthermore, we aim to foster active interaction among engineers, transcending the boundaries of companies and countries, as well as developers and users.”
