Vallery started working with distributed systems entirely by accident, while trying to bikeshed a MapReduce system in university.

Vallery worked as a systems administrator, which quickly expanded to focusing on cloud technologies and upstream application design. She began Kubernetes adoption in 2017, the mixed results of which led to the creation of the KubeCon talk "Challenges to Writing Cloud Native Applications", and ongoing developer advocacy/education. Vallery has become a staunch advocate for day-1 scalable and observable application design, as a result of her experiences as a downstream operator.

Vallery currently works at Lyft.
